Apple and Samsung make 94% of India’s smartphone exports as Made in India mobile shipments grows 6% in 2024

Apple and Samsung have accounted for around 94% of India’s smartphone exports, noted Counterpoint’s ‘Make in India’ Service on Thursday (March 20, 2025). Overall, ‘Made in India’ smartphone shipments grew 6% year-over-year (YoY) in 2024 primarily due to these two brands.

“Both the brands have significantly expanded their manufacturing in India to align with the country’s objective of reducing reliance on imports and strengthening its presence in the global supply chains,” the research firm said.

Samsung retained its position as the top smartphone manufacturer in India in 2024, registering a 7% YoY growth and driven by a 13% YoY increase in its exports.

Vivo had the second spot with a 14% YoY growth to capture a 14% shipment share. Foxconn Hon Hai’s manufacturing volumes grew 19% YoY in 2024 backed by Apple iPhone 14, iPhone 15 and iPhone 13 models.

Oppo slipped as fourth largest manufacturer, with its shipments declining 34% YoY. DBG’s shipments also saw a double-digit growth in 2024 due to Xiaomi and Realme.

Tata Electronics was the fastest growing smartphone manufacturer in 2024 with a 107% YoY growth. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 models were the major volume contributors here.

In the overall mobile handset segment (smartphones and feature phones), Dixon emerged as the top manufacturer with strong shipments from Transsion brands and Motorola.

In the smartphone segment, Dixon grew 39% YoY backed by new partnerships with Transsion brands and Realme.

Rising smartphone exports are also due to government’s PLI (Production-Linked Incentive) scheme that has encouraged global manufacturers to set up or expand their production facilities in the country.

“Major global smartphone manufacturers are increasingly diversifying production to ensure a more resilient supply chain and minimize the risks associated with over-reliance on a single country. India presents itself as a great manufacturing destination due to a huge local market, affordable labor costs and favorable schemes from the government focused on increasing local manufacturing. Smartphone manufacturing in India is expected to grow in double digits in 2025, along with increasing local value addition,” said Prachir Singh, Senior Research Analyst, Counterpoint.
