OpenAI offers ChatGPT Plus for free to U.S. college students till May

OpenAI will be giving their premium ChatGPT Plus subscriptions for free to all college students in the U.S. and Canada until May, just as they prepare for final exams. This means students will be able to avail the reasoning model, GPT-4o, image generation, voice and other advanced research capabilities.

The premium subscription is priced at $20 per month currently.

Just a day ago, rival Anthropic AI announced ‘Claude for Education’ which has ‘Learning Mode’ just for students which instead of giving direct answers to them attempts to guide them by asking them additional questions. The AI firm also said they would be partnering with Northeastern University, London School of Economics and Champlain College and offer them campus-wide access.

Anthropic also unveiled an ambassadors program which would allow students to work “directly with the Anthropic team” and launch educational initiatives on their campuses.

Students are a massive market for AI chatbots with a report by OpenAI previously stating that more than one-third of people at the college-age are ChatGPT users and around a quarter of their queries are based on learning and school-related work.
