CES 2025: Japan’s Kirin demoes ‘electric salt spoon’ that can control salt intake

At CES 2025, Kirin Holdings, a Japanese beverage company, demoed their electric spoon that can make food taste saltier without adding extra salt.

The company explained that they use mild electric current to concentrate sodium ion molecules which add saltiness to low-sodium foods.

The spoon can be detached from the handle, which has power and menu buttons. Users can choose the level of saltiness they want from between four options.

There’s a blue light on the spoon that turns white when you sip from it while holding it correctly. If not held properly, the electric salt spoon doesn’t work.

Kirin has said that the device was designed to help the Japanese consume less salt since the country is known to have more than double the salt intake recommended

.Kirin said a limited number of the devices were sold in Japan last year for about $127 a piece. And the company intends to sell it globally in the future.
