Italy’s Il Folgio publishes first newspaper edition produced entirely by AI

Italian newspaper Il Foglio has become the first media organisation globally to publish an entire edition using AI. The four-pager wrapped into the newspaper’s slim broadsheet edition was made available online and physically on Tuesday, The Guardian reported.

The politically conservative and economically liberal newspaper has been experimenting with AI as part of a month-long initiative to demonstrate the impact of the technology on journalism.

The edition covered Italian supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump who were opposed to cancel culture but supported his allegedly inconsistent actions, a story on Putin, and a piece on Italy’s economy.

Claudio Cerasa, the editor of Il Foglio revealed that everything in the edition from the articles to the headlines had been produced by AI. Cerasa told The Guardian that the role of journalists henceforth would be just to ask queries to an AI chatbot or tool and read the answers.

While the articles were found to be well-structured, clear and direct, with no grammatical errors, the articles did not include quotes from any human sources.

Artificial Intelligence is already starting to transform news publishing with the UK-based The Independent announcing a news service supported by Google AI. Recently, it was also reported that BBC will start using AI to generate more personalised content for users.
